JOHN KELLY SCULPTURE

One of this year’s McClelland Sculpture Survey & Awards finalists, artist John Kelly (based in Ireland) enlisted the assistance of DLD in the creation of his Survey entry.

For the past three decades, in his paintings and sculptures, Kelly has used specific events in social and art history to scrutinise ideas of identity, both national and personal.

The weight of words is a large-format billboard, which features an article written by Kelly that first appeared in the publication Art Monthly Australia. This text-based work brings to light the traumatic period in Irish history, An Gorta Mor (The Great Hunger). Whilst paying tribute to the ancestral past, this work is part of Kelly’s own Irish and English heritage.
