A DAY IN POMPEII

Held at Melbourne Museum in 2009 as part of Melbourne Winter Masterpieces, A Day In Pompeii gave visitors the opportunity to learn about daily life in the Roman Empire and understand the history of one of the world's most extraordinary cities, Pompeii - how the city came to be destroyed, lost and eventually rediscovered.

DLD, in conjunction with White Cube, was engaged to design the footprint and visitor flow of the exhibition, the location of all objects, the development of all 2D and 3D graphic information and exhibition identity.

A variety of innovative and dramatic interpretive strategies allowed visitors to use their imagination to encapsulate the experience of actually being there.

Wall textures were hand painted, replicating those of Roman Pompeii, and the graffiti found on the walls throughout was hand-lettered.

As the exhibition was to travel internationally, a lightweight substrate was required. Xanita Board was an ideal solution, being both lightweight and environmentally friendly and the designs could be digitally outputted direct onto the surface.

Following on from the success of the exhibition in Melbourne, with over 330,000 visitors, A Day In Pompeii also travelled to Wellington's Te Papa, the National Museum of Singapore and Perth.
